There is a transfer area, and it “works” even if you’re on a separate PNR. Quotation marks because I wouldn’t describe it as the smoothest process, so make sure you have ample time. Definitely one of the more bizarre transfer experiences.
And in early 2020 I had my passport stamped. You certainly have to pass through an immigration point in the international transit area. The link posted by realgaga is pretty accurate.
