I don't understand the need for pickles on a chicken sandwich. My first exposure to this was Chik-Fil-A many years ago. I grew up working for McDonald's, and when the McChicken first came out nationwide in the late 80's, I enjoyed it, with the simple toppings of mayo and lettuce. A customer asked for cheese on it one day, so it piqued my interest, and found it to be much better with cheese, then with bacon and cheese. I left McD's in the early 90's and joined Checker's. Their version was much better with a larger patty with a different type of breading (more of a panko-style), again with lettuce and mayo only (I added the cheese and bacon, of course).

I tried the Popeye's version when it first came out and the rush was so much they were almost always sold out. I found the patty was too thick as the bun became too soggy from the left over oil from frying it. Now, I find getting a fried chicken sandwich to be too much, so I usually will remove the bun and eat the patty with a fork and knife with lettuce and mayo if I cannot get an actual chicken breast (w/bones).

The Chicken Sandwich wars have heated up recently with all the fast food chains having their own versions, but what seems to be consistent now is that they all are made with pickles on them, and some are just bun, pickles, and the fried chicken breast. McDonald's commercials are even showing a McRib sandwich in them, so I thought they had a version like the McRib, drenched in BBQ sauce with slivered onions and pickles. I wonder what that may taste like?
