While you can save Frontier's processing fee by purchasing your ticket at their airport counter, there is the cost of driving to the airport and parking there while you go inside, versus just buying the ticket online. What likely happened to you is that there were very few seats remaining at that $50 price and someone bought it/them during the time it took you to get there.

Next time you see a fare online, input that you want to purchase 5 tickets and see if it will sell you that many. If it says it would, then you know there are at least 5 seats for sale at that price. If asking for 5 seats ends up with a higher price quote, you know there are less than 5 seats remaining at that price. You can then try 4, 3, 2, 1 etc. to see how many seats are actually still available at that lowest price. If it's just a few, by online while you can. If there's plenty, you may have time to buy them at the airport counter.
