Sofitel Queenstown Hotel & Spa
Check In We were met at curbside as the airport transport arrived, and our bags were swiftly collected before we got anywhere near them.Escorted into reception and seated with a team member for check-in with our booking (and 1-level upgrade confirmed) and the stay details outlined - room, breakfast, lounge hoursNicely done, and without any delays. We were 3 hours ahead of check-in time, but had expected and planned for this. They rang an hour later as we were shopping to say our room was ready, and our luggage had been taken up. Room The room was really nicely laid out, with the requested Super King bed, for the overly tall husband. My single criticism of the room and it's layout is that when you have a window framing the view of the Remarkables (range of mountains), that it would be nice if it was bigger, but that is getting picky.Table and chairs to sit at to work, comfy chairs for TV watching.Satellite TV (Sky TV), kept freezing up. Offered the OnDemand service, but it didn't work/record properly and only recorded 10%. Didn't really care...Bathroom had good sized shower and an excellent large oval spa bath, with a TV in the bathroom. Good toiletries range.Weird - overly designer taps, with a single joystick for volume and temperature. Managed to get wet every time I used it, and spray water all around the basin. Seemed like a cool deco choice - but wasn't. Service Very good everywhere - reception, housekeeping, restaurant, bar and Club loungeI'm a Kiwi travelling locally, and Queenstown is known for the 'league of nations' makeup of its workers. I didn't hear a single local accent other than the one Kiwi on breakfast service, but that is not unusual. Our population is made up of diverse ethnicities, with many of them being 4th/5th/6th generation New Zealanders so you never assume where a person might be "from" until you hear them talk!We like the idea that people come to visit and see the country, and stay on to work. Dining We had breakfasts included in the restaurant, and the Club Lounge was only open in the evenings from 5-7pm. The Lounge is very small, and so when it is overrun, they pop you out into the adjacent bar - but continue to serve drinks and food to the table, or you can forage through the lounge food as you wish.Breakfasts, lounge food, bar - all good Location We've been to Queenstown once or twice a year for many yeara, and have stayed in all the variety of Accor hotels there, along with most of the other brands. The newest hotel to open is the QT, adjacent to the MGallery which has nice rooms, and great food, but the service is fairly ordinary. We love the MGallery and it is our favourite, but thought we'd try a stay right IN town, and it was excellent. If you wanted anything, it is 50m to the main street, so very convenient indeed at the Sofitel. In the midst of a subdued Covid travel environment, it was fairly full. Overall Loved it there. We will definitely stay again.
