The flight time is not unusual for narrowbodies, especially in winter. I have had some 7 hours+ flights on AS and B6 going from east to north.
Due to the curvature of earth, the shortest flight path does usually head up in the northwest direction (although not too far north) and before pivoting southwest as it arrives on the west coast. Of course, the exact path is subject to a lot of factors, and weather is usually a primary factor.
Something must have happened there in the VA area, not only on the changing speed, but heading due east, instead in a northeast direction. Anyway...
