Yeah I think it's really not possible to say whether one is better or not. I've gotten upgrades immediately upon check-in using the app. OTOH, there are reports of front desks sometimes saying that online check-in locks you into the room you're assigned, which I suspect is really just poor service/laziness on staff's part, but that's still a nagging concern for me when presented with the choice of app check-in or not.
