Any suggestions on where I can spend that time comfortably? I don't mind getting a day pass to an airline club there if that is an option.

I'm an AA Platinum member - not sure if that helps. I'm flying on KLM for this trip in economy.

Any help will be much appreciated.

I would suggest that you really try to get a visa. Amsterdam is a great town and it would be a shame to spend 12 hours in the airport. If you for some reason cannot get a visa, there's a casino in the secure side where you could spend some time. You can try to use a OneWorld lounge with your American Platinum status, although I do not recall whether you're supposed to have traveled on a OneWorld carrier in order to gain entry. I've only used the KLM lounges at AMS, so I don't know whether the OneWorld lounges are good or not.

But really, go into town! It's only about 15 minutes on the train (leaving right from under the airport).
