What is the best way for me to cancel so that I don't lose any value? I am worried about losing value as a FFC if I were to use it to purchase a cheaper flight later. I don't need the money back because I am doing lots of flying on UA, I just don't want to lose anything when I use the credit for future flight(s).

Thanks.
Read the fare rules for the ticket. It might be refundable, with or without a fee. Or, it may not have the language about residuals being ignored. Not all P fares are created equally.
