In the future, do not leave without a closed out receipt. They try to pull this all the time at remote franchises; easy solution. Expect it, keep your fuel receipt, take videos of the car at check out and at return, and politely but firmly insist on a receipt. Do not physically leave until they provide one; after a few minutes, they will realize you can’t be scammed and will give it to you.
100% true , that’s why I took a video and tons of pictures inside and outside of the vehicle upon returning. Just did not expected a scam in USVI when I never ran into one in sketchy locations like Mexico , Sicily , Cyprus and Colombia. Lesson learned . I am off to the next rental in a month in another sketchy location (SDQ).
