While the 2 center seats are not right next to each other they're still better for any type of conversation or interaction. Sitting across the aisles or in a row of 4 windows you will have to physically get up and/or look around to see or talk to anyone else in your group.

Also, on a quick JFK-LHR overnight flight the only time you'll have much of anything to look at out the windows will be the first and last 10 minutes of the flight. Something to keep in mind, not sure I would plan the seats based on that.
