I started flying internationally on my own at age 12, and did it half a dozen times a year or more from then onwards. Airlines don't even insist on any special handling once children reach that age, assuming they can do it for themselves - or know to ask the nearest member of staff if unsure. The only important things are to make sure that he knows what the major steps in the process are, and to ask staff if he needs help.
