Remember that the 12/31 deadline is just when the charge has to post by. So you could buy plane tickets for travel in 2022 before year end and get the credit. Of course you could also subsequently change those travel plans if need be as long as you did it within the period of ticket validity.
Yes, if we don't manage to travel by Sep/Oct this year, I'll try to book for spring/summer. We have had to postpone a trip to Denmark since COVID but don't want to go in the winter months, so if we don't make it by the autumn window this year, it will be another year.
