VIE Hotel Bangkok MGallery = Overdue for a Refresh

Introduction I stayed at VIE Hotel Bangkok and had a mixed experience. I can recognize some strong points such as having lots of space available with a large suite upgrade, dining was very good, and service as well. However the deal killer was the weak air conditioning in the depressing dark bedroom which prevented good sleep, so until the hotel goes through renovations I cannot fully recommend this place except for people who highly value a very spacious room. Room I booked a room at VIE last year shortly after they were scheduled to reopen after covid but they changed their reopening date and my booking was cancelled. Kudos to the GM for moving my reservation at Sofitel Sukhumvit at that time, and he also promised me a good deal for our next stay at VIE. They made good on their promise and I was pre-upgraded to a suite; at check-in I ended up in one of the higher categories of suites I believe. They told me I had the “Resident Suite” which is not listed on the website and not available for sale to guests (not sure why). Our suite was much larger than the executive suites which they also showed us before settling into our room.More than half of rooms at VIE hotel are suites so for people who want lots of space for a moderate budget this hotel can be a very good choice because the odds of suite upgrades for Accor Platinum or Diamond guests would be quite good I believe. I liked the hardware floors (no carpet) and our room also had a kitchen although strangely no mini-fridge. The main problem was the weak air conditioning as can be the case with older buildings. It might be one of the reasons why they decided to install fixed wood blinds at an angle in the window of the bedroom to reduce sunlight and heat in the room, but the result was a dark room, even darker than Muse Hotel. Those blinds have clearly seen better days as the rest of the room which was aging. It was useful to have a half bathroom near the entrance but the sink was unusually small and barely enough space to wash our hands. The living and dining areas were very large and did not suffer from the darkness issue because only one of the two outer walls had the wood blinds, the other wall had standard windows. The bathroom amenities were nothing remarkable and in dispenser bottles – as noted by others the luxury toiletries have been cut out years ago. There was a pillow menu which is a feature of good luxury hotels and they even had small samples to help guests decide which pillow would match their desires. One of them was stained however so while the idea is excellent the result was a bit of a turnoff. Dining Breakfast time was until 10am which is earlier than almost every other hotel although on weekends they extend to 10:30am. There was a small buffet which decent choices and guests were asked to wear gloves before touching thongs. As part of our rate package we had lunch included which was quite high quality, in fact I believe the chef used to have a Michelin star. The lunch was probably the highlight of our stay and we could even have drinks via the numerous Accor Diamond vouchers I received at check-in. The hotel also offers happy hour for guests Platinum and above. The drink list was above average while food was mostly fried stuff and desserts. The odd thing was the timing: 3:30pm to 5:30pm. The venue for breakfast, lunch and happy hour looked great – clearly remodeled recently and very bright, in complete contrast with our room. Gym and Pool The gym was large but fairly busy despite low occupancy of the hotel. The swimming pool nearby was in a strange spot, sitting right above a busy boulevard. Wifi Wifi was fast with speeds of 65-90 Mbps during the day, however in the evening sometimes wifi was not working at all or was very slow. Overall Overall food & beverage at the hotel was excellent and the Accor Diamond treatment was as good as can be expected. However if we cannot sleep well in a hot city like Bangkok then it is a deal killer for me unfortunately. I wish they had taken the opportunity during covid closure to work on renovations.
