2 tickets more per ticket than 1 ticket

This evening on the BA web site, I booked Euro Traveller flights for my fiancée and myself to go away for a weekend and discovered that the outward flight was £10 more per ticket if I specified 2 passengers rather than 1.

My fiancée and I therefore used two PCs simultaneously to make separate bookings on the same flight. Everything was going fine for both of us at the lower fare until it came to submitting the credit card information. She must have clicked just before me because the BA web site accepted her booking but it rejected mine because availability of my fare had just been reduced. I therefore had to start again and pay £10 more for the outward flight.

As I had suspected all along, there was only one ticket left at the lower fare. However, what surprised me was that when specifying 2 passengers, the BA web site would quote a higher fare for both tickets when one of the tickets could have been booked at the lower fare. We ended up getting around it and got that one last ticket at the lower fare anyway, so no problem, but only because I noticed this discrepancy. Why did the BA web site not offer the lower fare for 1 of the 2 tickets when I specified 2 passengers?
