Hotel Northland stay 2/25/21-2/27/21
Long-time lurker and first-time poster. Adding to collective perspective about this newish hotel with classic bones. Had very enjoyable 2-night paid solo stay here in late February as work-cation.
Checked in online, but did not receive digital key prior to designated arrival time, so stopped at desk. Lobby is gorgeous - art deco style with expansive seating and congregation area, open to mezzanine and Crystal Ballroom on second floor. I was only guest at desk (or in lobby, for that matter), so very pleasant front desk clerk quickly and efficiently issued my keys.
Assigned to room 419; upgraded from King Standard to King Bedroom Suite. Room is somewhere between a junior suite and a full 2-room suite, in that entry leads you into a sitting area with sofa and chair (where refrigerator with transparent door and single/double pod-brewer coffeemaker is also set up). This area is divided by partial wall from bedroom and bath area. Closet had safe, 2 robes and slippers provided, and ample hanger space. Very comfortable bed with 4 king-size pillows. Bathroom included tiled walk-in shower (glass sliding door) with rain-head shower, single sink (but lots of vanity counter space around sink to lay out toiletries) and usable open shelving running length of vanity below. Single thermostat for room, and there didn't seem to be an obviously discernable difference in temperature between areas. One highlight (clearly part of the renovation) was abundance of both electric outlets and USB ports for charging through both the sitting area and bedroom area - the most I can recall seeing in any hotel room - both stand-alone within the wall, and embedded into side tables in both the sitting area and bedroom space. Another facet I appreciated in room design was ledge that ran length of both sides of dividing wall - nice aesthetically, but also very practical in that I kept my wallet, keys, phone here for easy access and out of way. My only (minor) complaint is that only usable tables for work or eating in the room were two smallish, barstool-styled tray tables. Provided sufficient room to place laptop, but not useable for mouse or any additional paperwork to be placed along side. Also made dining in room a bit more of a challenge.
Parked in city parking ramp (Pine Street) next door. Parking pass is available through hotel for $15/day which includes unlimited in-out privileges. However, front desk clerk helpfully identified to me that if I wasn't planning on using vehicle (which I wasn't), would be less expensive to simply pay city rate in ramp, which is free after 6 pm in evenings and on weekends. Can't recall exact total when I left on 2/27 morning (can't find receipt), but was less than $15 (and certainly less than $30). Valet not offered currently due to COVID, though honestly wouldn't be necessary - was less than 2 minute walk from my parking space to front desk.
Two on-site restaurants - Poke the Bear (located on ground level, half-flight below lobby) which I'd describe as somewhere between sports bar and gastropub, and Walnut Room (on lobby level - did not eat here or look inside, but more formal atmosphere based on menu, prices, and website description). Latter offered breakfast only on weekends - presume this is where Elites who receive breakfast benefit would redeem (no lounge at this property). I did order food for pick-up from Poke the Bear on first night (room service was also available for additional delivery fee) - crispy fried brussel sprouts and soba noodle salad. Food was prepared expeditiously - ready in less than 15 minutes. When I picked up, I only saw two other customers dining in the restaurant. The hotel is well situated downtown, one block away from many waterfront restaurants and establishments on Washington St, and easy walk across Walnut St or Dousman Ave bridges to additional restaurants on Broadway Ave (including two well-regarded breweries), so lots of accessible food and beverage within easy distance.
Accurate folio email to me early morning of departure, and I was able to check out directly via app and bypass front desk.
No housekeeping service due to short nature of stay coupled with current COVID modifications. That said, room was immaculate upon arrival, adherent to all described Marriott cleaning and sanitation protocols. No ice machine identified in hotel, but I messaged front desk both nights requesting bucket of ice, and it arrived within 5 minutes (front desk agent) both times.
Great service, great stay. I would definitely stay here again for leisure or business. In fact, I intermittently attend conferences at the KI Convention Center approx 4 blocks away which has attached Hyatt Regency (which was converted from an Embassy Suites) and new-ish Hampton Inn attached. Though I've stayed at both of these and stays were fine, hands down I would recommend Hotel Northland over these, particularly for those that appreciate a hotel with character and unique identity.
