Sorry if this is a dumb question.

Trying to understand if I have the amex platinum card that gives 5x points on hotels only if booked through amextravel.com and I am booking a Marriott property, is it best to book through amex or the hotel directly for the hotel points? If I book directly with the hotel, don't I only get 1 point per dollar from amex? What is better financially? Thanks all
