I had virtually the same situation last month, BDQ-DEL-EWR on AI, followed by EWR-ORF on UA on a separate ticket. AI checkin staff at BDQ would not through-check to ORF.
I had to collect bags and re-check at EWR (albeit right next to the connecting bag dropoff vs regular checkin area). Unfortunately in my case it cost me $150 since I was allowed 3 bags on AI as a *G, but UA Gold domestic allowance EWR-ORF was only 2 bags.
Sorry to hear that. Which airline do you have status with to get *G?
Different question: I have about 5 hours layover at ORD but wanted to go standby on an earlier ORD-IAH (this leg is on a separate UA 016 etix; the BLR-DEL-ORD is on a separate UA 016 eTix). But with the checked bags can I go standby? If so, can I request with UA at DEL or ORD?
