Maybe you missed what I wrote, but the only reason we took out the Premium coverage was because a regular credit card doesn't cover rentals for more than 30 days. However, if the rental company is splitting the rental into a maximum of 30 days anyways, there is no need for this coverage.

My post was trying to help others who are thinking of getting this coverage specifically because they have a rental that is more than 30 days and think they won't be covered by free insurance that the credit card offers. My point is (at least with Avis/Budget) you can never have a rental of more than 30 days. Many of the reviews of the Amex Premium Insurance and posts in this forum tout the 42 days of coverage as one of the biggest benefits. What I was trying to post is that this is no benefit at all. I ended up paying $40 for something that the Amex card gives me for free.

To answer your other comment, "Don't see how that's Amex's fault." I explained that too. When Amex originally used to post the charge based on the pending charge at the beginning, this problem never occurred since even if they split the rental up, they didn't make a second pending charge. However, now that they charge the $19.99 when the charge posts on the credit card, the fee shows up twice.

And to add insult to injury, if you end up with any ancillary charges from the rental car company (like forgetting to fill up gas, etc.), many times they post that separately. You will end up getting charged the $19.99 for every charge they post. During our rental the car wouldn't start one day, and Avis had to send someone down to give the car a boost. They charged us $218 for this. (We called at the end and they refunded the money since it was their fault.) However, you guessed it - Amex now charged a 3rd time for the Premium Car Rental. Now it is going to create even more work calling Amex to get these charges removed.
