Right now they are offering flights in to YYC with a connection in VYR to Westjet. So could they require that I take that connection if that is offered as an alternative if direct SEA-YYC is canceled for the end of August? don't want to have to book and pay before the end of March to qualify for any kind of refund- and preferably not just a credit for future travel.
Firstly, a cancellation by AS or a schedule change of more than 1 hour is eligible for a refund to the original form of payment, not 2 hours. This was true before the Pandemic.

AS has only been flying to YVR since last April. YYJ, YLW, YEG & YYC have been in the calendar and bookable for dates beyond the expiry of the border closure. When the closure keeps getting extended, those flights are cancelled by AS. AS can re-accommodate to AC or WS, however you are not obligated to accept the change. If the SEA-YYC flight is cancelled, you are eligible for a full refund to your original form of payment.

I booked a 6 segment circle trip with two stopovers on a companion certificate. The first 4 segments were flown in November, 2020 & the last two, PHX-SEA-YLW were originally supposed to be flown March 1st. I changed them to March 23rd. Ultimately, the SEA-YLW segment was canceled.

I called AS to cancel the two unflown segments. They processed a refund to my credit card.

As an aside, AS errored and refunded the entire itinerary crediting $700 more than they should have. It took me a couple of days to get through to refunds to give it back. I was happy to see the chargeback.
