Ideally there would be a way to bid on specific seats. For example, on the Acela I would happily bid and pay extra to upgrade to one of the single seats in F. But I would be quite disappointed to have my bid accepted and get stuck at one of the 4-top tables with 3 other people - would prefer staying in business in a normal seat. The risk would likely deter me from bidding at all.
