Arghmeinaugen I literally posted a review two posts above your post. I stayed again in January 2020, and had many of the same experiences that I'll recap below:
- Upgraded from a base room to Executive Suite as an Ambassador Elite.
- Breakfast or points, and I elected to have breakfast in the restaurant. Very extensive spread with Chinese, Indian, Arabic and western options.
- Club lounge on the 42nd floor is excellent, very spacious and has fantastic views - the polar opposite of the overpacked and dreary ones at the Marriott Marquis. The food rotates throughout the week, and they were serving really good Chinese food from the Shanghai Club restaurant with a few vegetarian options for the non-meat eaters among us. Happy hour from 6-8 PM with drinks that are served at your seat rather than a self-service bar.
- Service is professional and friendly across the board.
- Pool is decently sized, but the leisure facilities are a bit skimpy [i.e. no Jacuzzi, can't recall if there was a sauna/steam room or if they were working] and in need of a refresh.
- No design changes whatsoever from the Shangri-La days - furnishings all the same, lobby wasn't changed despite management telling me they were going to renovate it in the second half of 2019 after my first stay in May 2019. Annoyingly, most of the linens from towels to napkins still have the embossed Shangri-La 'S' despite the hotel being nearly a year into its changeover.
I really like this hotel, and would easily stay here over the Marriott Marquis [which I didn't enjoy at all, and also share the OP's opinion about it being my least favorite of the many Marriott hotels I've stayed at in Qatar]. The Sheraton has the best lounge in Doha bar none, but the rooms here are more modern.
FYI: the fifth tower in the complex, just outside the JW Marriott and across the way, was supposed to open as part of a local Qatari chain but was mothballed and sat empty for years. It's now opening later this year as
Le Méridien City Center Doha, and there was furniture going into the ground-floor lobby, restaurant and rooms when I was there in 01/20. Hopefully it'll be fresher in design and more cohesive than the JW, and could be a complementary addition to the Marriott portfolio in the country.
