It's one of the peak seasons for Japanese travel. These dates coincide with end of school(term 2) and the New Year holidays which everything more or less shuts from the 30th to the 3rd. The 6th marks the beginning of the 3rd school term in most places. Prices will become more expensive ex-Japan the closer you get to New Years and the few days after.

This happens every year and all Japanese and Foreign airlines like to scalp the public during this time , thus no cheap(or very few )seats available. So take the early flights that have the space available at the price you are willing to pay.....
