So the BidUp program worked as advertised. At 1hr52min before my scheduled departure I received an email that my BidUp had been accepted. I also then received a new ticket via email and the app on my phone updated as soon as I opened it. I was assigned a window seat in the business class car. The seat map showed three opens seats at the time (two of them being handicap seats). The app also said three seats left for booking. About five minutes before scheduled departure time the app showed business class was full. I do not know if they filled those seats with last minute purchases or with other BidUp users.

Thanks for the data point. I am sure filling business class makes Amtrak happy, but this personally makes me less likely to bid, especially if I see that my train has low occupancy overall.
