United changed the 777 last minute on my flight to one with much less lie flat seats 🙄 so trying to make sure I’ll get the upgrade.
In general, you won't have an option to do what you're suggesting, but the equipment change may mean that an agent is willing to make an exception. I'd call now, rather than waiting until the day of travel.
An agent may be able to keep the existing PlusPoints request. An app SDC would require a new request.
Is BBB-CCC US/Canada? If not, the allowable connection time rises to 24 hours, so you wouldn't be adding a stopover -- but it's generally difficult to SDC on the app and keep the second leg the same. A day-of-flight agent might be able to help in that case, but, like I said, I'd just call now.
Luggage won't be an issue -- once you've confirmed a change, the luggage tags will print to your final destination even with a 6-hour transfer, assuming that 6 hours doesn't mean overnight.
