I dont know if you HAVE to use itunes or not, I assume you do. BUT, installing it takes a couple of minutes, its free, it will sort out your mp3 files in a few seconds and works really, really well. Then you just transfer songs (files) to the ipod and do it again from time to time in order to keep your ipod and computer in sync.
BTW, ipod/itunes users are BOUND to sound like Apple employees. They're the ONLY electronic things I own that work this well as the margarita blender.
Any ipod users who are reading this should check out the Monster Cable car adapter. Reealllly cool.
