It is possible that the crew may miss the violation, but it is a safety rule designed to assure that there is a responsible adult to attend to the children in an emergency (which neither of you can do in WT, while seated in F).
Really? BAs own website has a section about booking your children into a different class of travel on the same plane and it says it can be done for all children 5-12. The only restriction seems to be that someone over 16 needs to be present if child is under 5. This is not the case. My children will be 11/13/15 and in fact only one the youngest is considered a child by BA - the other 2 are young adults.
