I am curious about this. I tried to use my CSR trip delay insurance under similar circumstances, including the purchase of an alternate ticket. The claim was denied. Reason was because UA accommodated me within a time period of less than 24 hours, i.e. hotel, meal voucher, and a flight the next morning. I recall the alternate ticket being fairly inexpensive and it was not worth my time to continue to pursue it.
That is correct - while the interruption needs to be greater than 12 hours or requiring an overnight stay, they will deduct the amount offered by the carrier from the claim.
