Breckenridge: Round 2

With the lessons learned from our last (attempted) trip to the mountains we drove up to Breckenridge on Friday night. We met our DEN based friends at the house and in all honesty stayed up a little too late given that we were skiing the next day. However, since we were already in town and we didn’t have to wake up at the crack of dawn to fight traffic, we still had a leisurely morning and had breakfast at the house before heading off to the mountain.

Like our trip two weeks prior, Breckenridge and the surrounding resorts had received a ton of fresh powder so the parking lots were packed even at 8:00. We ended up parking at the Gold King lot across from the gondola lots and took the bus to the Breck Connect gondola. The gondola line was out into the parking lot and almost all of the peak busses had long lines as well. We ended up hopping on the bus that makes a few stops in town before dropping you at the base of Peak 9 which was the quickest option. 45 minutes later we were in the lift line for the Beaver Run SuperChair. The line was surprisingly short given the chaos we saw at the bottom of the mountain.

Not a bad view to wake up to

We spent Saturday morning on Peak 9 amd I got introduced to my first set of Black ski runs (this is my 5th ever ski trip) that kicked my butt but soon I was feeling confident enough that we all headed over to Peak 10 (all Black and Double Black) for the remainder of the day. The GF and a couple of our other friends were showing off their skills on the jumps and the moguls while my only focus was to get down in one piece.

We had lunch reservations at TenMile Station which is located at the base of Peak 10. Due to Covid-19 restrictions you can only sit and eat in the lodge with a reservation, otherwise you have to eat outside. After a quick lunch and warm-up we headed back up the mountain to ski the rest of the afternoon. Snow started falling around 2:00 so we made our way over to Peak 8 and took the 4 O’clock run down to the Gondola parking lot where it was a quick walk to the car. Back at the house it was a quick rinse in the shower and we all hopped in the hot tub to soothe our sore muscles.

Who needs a cooler when you have the snow?

With the snow continuing to come down we decided to stay in for the night and ordered some pizzas and calzones to go. We hunkered down in the house and played cards for a while before heading off to bed as there was another long day of skiing on Sunday.

Sunday the snow was still falling and it was hard to see the peaks from the house. This had the benefit of keeping most of the locals away and we had no issues finding parking. We took the gondola up to the base of Peak 7 where we caught first chair on the Independence SuperChair. So much snow had fallen that I got my first experience skiing in true powder and it was a great feeling.

We lingered on Peak 7 for a while hoping that the Kensho SuperChair on Peak 6 would open but unfortunately, due to the high winds that didn’t happen. The weather was downright nasty and at some points we had to stop skiing mid run because you couldn’t see 3 feet in front of you. The girls bailed around 11 and the guys headed over towards Peak 10 as the lift lines on 7 and 8 were starting to get long. Around noon, the sun came out and we had a great afternoon weather wise. Aside from our first morning runs on Peak 7 I skied Blacks all day and my legs are still angry with me as I type this.

Exhausted from skiing all weekend we decided to go into town for dinner at Flip Side, an awesome burger spot in the heart of downtown. After a long day of skiing and stuffing our faces with milkshakes, burgers and fries we called it a night early and headed back to the house to get some much needed sleep.
