Is this true? Are there any strategies manage this without leaving the Citi ecosystem to accomplish, otherwise ways that will not require a hard inquiry?
Would closing the AA card in close proximity to another Citi application lend support for approval (presuming strong credit score, however several recent inquires and cards granted (one by citi.)
No. And that's case with most banks' business airline cards. Most (if not all) banks don't let you product change an business card to a personal card, and many banks don't have enough business cards to choose from to make product changes within the business card family practical. And some banks even put in restrictions that you can't product change a partner card to a non-partner card (ie, an airline card to a bank points card), even if both are business cards or both are personal cards.

So that's something you should always keep in for business cards you apply for. If you think you may want to downgrade, investigate whether that is possible before you apply for the card, or else assume that's impossible.

And keep in mind that Citi business cards (as with business cards from most banks) don't appear on your credit report (other than the inquiry when you applied). So no one outside of Citi is likely to know that you have the card, had the card, or closed the card. So no one other than Citi will even know the timing of your closure relative to anything else. And no one other than Citi will know whether you closed the card or not, because one other than Citi knew that you opened the card in the first place!

And IIRC Citi runs separate credit card departments for personal vs business cards, and so I'm not ever whether they look at your business card history when you apply for a personal card "from scratch".

And remember, you don't earn a signup bonus when product changing a card, only when apply for a card "from scratch". So what card are you so interested in getting without a hard pull yet don't care about the signup bonus?
