Flight schedule change refund, USA

Hi everyone

Hope you are all doing great during these crazy times.

So, hopefully, I am just being paranoid but would love somebody with more experience to give some advice. Hopefully, I am clear in my explanation.

We booked flights to the USA in July 2019 for travel in March 2020.

Due to COVID, we changed March 2020 to August 2020 and paid the €340 fare difference we had to pay.

July 2020 changed the Aug 20 flights to April 2021 - €84 fare difference we had to pay.

With everything that is happening in Ireland, travel-wise, we called to change the April 2021 flights to November 2021, but this was the first time there was no fare difference.

Actually, the new flights were much cheaper than we paid in total.

I called Aer Lingus, to ask, as we paid a total of €1500ish for our flights, and the new flights were only €870, if we have to change again, and let's say the flights at the time are €1000, would we have to pay anything, as we already paid €1500?

The agent informed us, ( he did not answer my question above) he could see our original flight times have changed, and are now outside of the 2-hour flight change schedule, we can apply for a full refund. New flight times are 2h10 min difference then we booked origenally.

Of course, we took the full refund.

24 hours later, we received an email…

Despite our best efforts, there are occasions when our guests' travel plans are affected by unavoidable disruptions to our flights. This serves as confirmation that Aer Lingus was unable to operate a flight in accordance with the schedule and may be submitted to your insurer or others as applicable. You were rebooked on an alternative service, you are not due a refund of the fare.

I called today, and they said it is just a generic email, and the full refund will be issuedand to ignore the email?

Is this normal?

Thank you.
