Citi has always been more of a global bank. So while they have 700 US branches, they have 1800 outside the US -- which is more than Chase, BofA, and Wells, combined.

FWIW - Citibank is not your typical consumer bank, as it never aims to serve typical consumers.
Decades ago, even the entire U.S. market was so keen in offering free checking, Citi was a few that retained a balance requirement without offering free checking.
