IIRC when I was a kid, Russell Stover chocolate was considered to be pretty good, generally above the drugstore and grocery store brands.
Somewhat later, as a grad student in the Bay Area, See's was considered to be pretty good and IIRC had their own stores in some locations.
Now I'm generally happy with any genuine dark chocolate (plus white chocolate when it's available, and I'll even buy the pastel colored bunnies if I see them around Easter as I loved them as a kid), but my standard European chocolate is Neuhaus (if I don't have a lead to something better, such as a gift shop in a top hotel), then some genuine local gourmet stuff, then European Godiva (RIP). I'm not much of a chocolate eater, so I can easily leave it untouched until it's past its prime.
