BA World Traveller Plus flight report LHR-MIA-LHR

I checked in at TXL (Berlin-Tegel) on Jan. 8th, 2003, for my flight to LHR. There was a long line at check-in (no separate World Traveller Plus counter), so I chose my seat at the e-ticket-kiosk and then took my place in the line to check in my luggage. The A319 took off more than 2 hours delayed because of snow in LHR (not more than 1 inch as I found out on arrival). Meal service in World Traveller economy (World Traveller Plus cabin on longhaul leg only) consisted of a tasty sandwich, dessert and full bar service. Arrival at LHR was delayed, too, of course, baggage delivery took long, so were the distances to be walked at LHR terminal 1. I stayed overnight at Heathrow Renaissance Hotel in a small, but perfectly soundproof Club level room with airfield view. Club lounge evening snacks were disappointing, but continental breakfast was good. The hotel does not offer a courtesy bus, so you have to pay 6 GBP for each ride to or from airport! To avoid check-in lines for the MIA flight on the next morning, I checked in by phone the evening before which was convenient, because you just have walk to an e-ticket kiosk to get your boarding pass and check-in your luggage at any vacant check-in counter. Departure of BA 207, again, was delayed for one and a half hour, because the pathetic amount of snow made the B 747-400, which was parked away from terminal 3, appear too late at the gate. When the depature gate was finally announced on the information screens, a long line formed in front of the gate. Boarding was swift, in an orderly manner by classes, status and rows (no preferred boarding for World Traveller Plus). The World Traveller Plus cabin had approx. six rows in a 2-4-2 configuration. The 38 inch seat pitch was fully sufficient, as was the seat width. I had a seat in the last row of the cabin, which I recommend, if you do not manage to get a bulkhead seat. The inseat entertainment system offered 18 video (quite new movies) and many audio channels as well as several games and a flight information channel. Meal service is the same as in World Traveller economy and consisted of a hot lunch after departure and a cold snack just before arrival. As economy service begins in the World Traveller Plus cabin, you always get the choice between the two entrees offered. Food was very good (in contrast to many others I like BA's food) and the quantity was OK, too. Full bar service was available. Cabin attendents were nice and always present and offered water and orange juice several times between meal services. Immigration and luggage delivery in MIA were rather slow. For the return flight BA 206 to LHR, no telephone check-in was possible (phone check-in is not offered in the U. S.), so I had to queue, but not for long, as MIA has a designated World Traveller Plus counter. Boarding was a little more confused than in LHR, but World Traveller Plus travellers were granted priority boarding. Take off was, again, postponed due to the incoming flight's air traffic problems in LHR, but was as enjoyable as the flight to MIA, although - flying a british carrier - I expected a hot english breakfast and not the small continental breakfast offered. Despite the one hour delay, the pilots were able to make the aircraft arrive almost in time at LHR. The Berlin connection flight was delayed again for more than half an hour. Service was OK. When the A319 arrived at TXL, immigration and luggage delivery was done pretty fast (OK, it ***is*** a small airport). All in all, World Traveller Plus offers a very good value for people (like me) who want some in-flight comfort, but cannot afford business class, the only thing really annoying are the frequent delays at chronically jammed LHR airport.
