Platinum seems to be the sweet spot.

Time and again Marriott has demonstrated that they don’t value their customers, even at the top. So, my recommendation is don't chase the status and minimize the dollars you spend with Marriott - direct it to good hotels within Marriott if you can, but the status isn’t what it used to be.
