United has added some O/D flights to FL during the pandemic, such as BOS-MCO. This SNA-HNL flight is not surprising. If the booking is not maderized, UA can shift the passengers to LAX-HNL easily. I won't guess whether or not this route will be more successful than LAX/SFO-JFK flights. But it is a good idea for UA to gamble for the near-future traffic.
