Canceling flights in the no-change-fee world

Hi - I feel like this may be a dumb question, but I haven't been traveling much since all the fee changes were made, and I wasn't able to find an answer searching.

I have a trip in a couple weeks (regular main cabin tix) that we will be unable to take I won't have imminent plans to buy any new tickets. I gather that I can't just cancel and get an evoucher, is that right? Do I just make a dummy booking for many months out and then change it again when I figure out where/when I want to use the flight credit? Or is there a better strategy?
