If your company is enrolled in AA's Business ExtrAA program, one of the options for using points is to designate employees for Gold AAdvantage status. This has nothing to do with how much they do or don't fly. (You wouldn't want to waste the points on someone who flies enough to earn it on his/her own.)
BTW, when I was involved with it, crediting flights to Biz ExtrAA was an incredible hassle so we never did it, but I understand things have improved since. In any case, it doesn't get in the way of earning regular individual miles; you can do both.
