The one by my house without contactless actually closed recently (not 100% sure if temporarily or permanently but wouldn't be surprised if the latter). I'm not even sure offhand where the next nearest one is.
Oh well, there are at least several other fast food burger places around here--most (if not all) which take contactless chain-wide now. Even if their implementations of contactless aren't the greatest (e.g. only handing the terminal out the window if you explicitly say you want to use Apple Pay in the case of my local McDonald's--which admittedly is an improvement from when they'd insist on tapping your phone for you).

Separate apps are a hassle because they're finicky. My ExxonMobile app will run my credit card, but the app won't turn on/activate the pump. Also, you have to have already downloaded and set up the app before using it. Not sure why some corporations insist on having their own app. It has to be developed and maintained.
I haven't had too many issues with most retailer apps in general. BK's coincidentally was probably the worst, IMO, which explains why they supposedly completely redid it at one point (but I only downloaded it for one of the T-Mobile Tuesdays/free Impossible Whopper promos anyway).
