No change fee is no change fee. For now. I doubt that this "permanent" change lasts very long.
i once was told that a ticket can only be changed 9 times. in the pre covid era i had a europe-HNL TierPoint run ticket with 10 legs. after several sched changes i managed to get 16 legs. and it was change number 9. AA hotline told me that the next change would be a little bit more difficult. If i understood it correct it involves something like printing the 16 legs on paper and manually create a new PNR and enter them flight by flight and start all over again...
