FWIW the latest league table of supermarket pricing (Aldi, Lidl, Tesco, Sainsbury’s, Asda: which is the cheapest UK supermarket? (lovemoney.com) is :
Asda £48.71
Tesco £53.30
Sainsbury’s £56.38
Waitrose £68.69

So all the value calculations proposed upthread should be viewed in the light that you're paying, on average, about 6% more for the same stuff at Sainsburys than Tesco.
You are assuming you are paying 6% extra for the same stuff. re Branded products, makes sense (also holds true for Waitrose at a bigger premium).

For the non branded (ie Meat and Veg etc) then you have to ask yourself are they all the same? if so, why bother with anything but the cheapest supermarket.

Personally I buy all my fish from a fishmonger, meat from a butcher and the rest from Sainsbury's for Avios (previously Waitrose) Waitrose is a pain location wise, Sainsbury's is close and now with the rewards its tipped over to being the primary place.
