IMO a better analogy would be that someone makes a reservation (at a guaranteed availability rate if you wish, but the rate plan or cost doesn't really matter) and then the hotel burns down. I'd be pleased if they bothered to contact me to cancel the reservation shortly after the fire, of course with any points or deposits returned prmptly.
I was responding to a question about whether extra compensation was due specifically for a property not delivering on a "guaranteed availability" rate because they were closed. So in this case the rate plan absolutely matters as context.
