I have a new twist on this. I have actually booked a "Guaranteed Availability" rate at a hotel for next week, but the hotel has decided to shut down for the remainder of the month (they are not required to by law).

I, for one, wouldn't interpret the guarantee to be a guarantee that they are open! Merely a guarantee that you can book a room in a sold out situation,
assuming that the hotel is operating. Whether they are required by law to be open or not doesn't play into it. They are closed. Would you be expecting special compensation if the hotel had burned down because you had booked a "guaranteed availability" rate?
