In my experience they can and do this: TG rebooked my BMI award ticket onto GA (they gave me a paper FIM), UA on TK award gave me an option to rebook onto AF on the same day or onto AC the following morning (plus hotel/meal vouchers) - I had some excess baggage, so had chosen overnight plus AC (they actually reissued the ticket - the new one was on UA 016 plate).
