You can definitely have multiple bookings for the same flight, at least in the very short term. I always make sure I have my new, good price locked in before I cancel my old ones. Whatever sweeping they do for duplicate bookings seems to be an automated overnight type thing.
Same here but as soon as I see the new booking displaying correctly in my upcoming trips I cancel the old booking so I have both bookings for 45 minutes or so tops
