HE Akbar al-Baker, QR CEO Interview Feb 2 2021

Interesting 25min video interview with CEO on Tue Feb 2 2021 . Few points covered:

1. Passengers are very important. Reputation is very important.
2. Currently QR is the largest international long haul carrier in the world.
3. 80% of QR fleet is in the air. Many other leading airlines have grounded most of airplanes.
4. 11,000 layoffs. Several thousand more to come. First priority for hiring will be giving to laid off workers.
5. QR issued nearly $1.6B in refunds while other carriers froze refunds and giving vouchers.
6. Launched 7 new destinations during pandemic including Seattle.
7. Ranked # 1 carrier for cargo. 10% of the world's cargo capacity. Before pandemic # 2. Five years ago # 22.
8. QR received funding based on equity injection vs other countries giving bail-out to airlines.
9. Not increased fares even though there is a perception.
10. Per seat mile, most expensive airfares are in the US.
11. IATA travel pass. Istanbul is pilot project.
12. Some new aircraft deliveries that were scheduled in next 3 to 4 years being pushed out to 2028 / 2029.
13. A380 bought in '04. Oil was <$40 and reached $140. Ten in fleet, keep 5. Back in air not before next 2 yrs.
14. In future will introduce 777x.
15. For cargo, plans to replace current B777 with next generation with 15-20% better fuel efficiency.
16. Hamad expansion. Phase 1 for FIFA 2022 & increase up-to 58M. Phase 2 after 2022 under 70M pax.
17. QR contributes 4.9% directly to Qatar's GDP (and indirectly 11%).
