I can assure you that people are far more pi$$ed off to pay for seats, only to have an aircraft change screw it all up, then people who are annoyed that they cannot pick a seat 1 year in advance.
If that's worked in advance for you... great. But with COVID, IB has no real idea what aircraft will be operating the route. The 8 month thing - i.e. when the Winter 2022 schedule is released in roughly April - is something I've seen many times before.
