Knowing I'll need to pass through US CBP (I have Global Entry) and then will need to re-check baggage on the AA flight, is 2.5 hours too tight of a connection?

Thanks in advance!
With Global Entry you should be fine.

I don't travel with luggage. With Global Entry and carry on bags, it has never taken longer than 15 minutes, and often less, from plane to curb when arriving on international flights at LAX. The only unknown is how long it will take your luggage to get to the carousel. It used to take as long as an hour, however, even if it were to take that long, you still should have plenty of time to make that transfer. If I were in your situation, I'd get a free luggage cart, skip the recheck desk, walk the 50-100 yards from TBIT to T4 and use a skycap there to check the bags.
