I know people who never formally check out of hotels (at least in the US) and never have any problem.
If the property supports it, another option is to check out on the app, and presumably you could do that anytime after the latest checkout time of the day (e.g. after 4pm) and still be considered present for the last night, though the apps often won't allow you to check out early in my experience.
There are some hotels that like to re-run credit cards and such. I don't really understand the benefit of all that extra process; some hotels seem to like to create extra paperwork and steps for no reason in the 21st century.
