I am normally a Hertz UC man and the camping out method worked for me 50/50.
I arrived at the same time as you last week and the lot was packed full, they weren't bringing up any new vehicles to the Executive aisle. They kept mentioning if I didn't see what I needed they could change my reservation inside to an AWD SUV at an updated rate. I mentioned that I was heading up to Breckenridge and was EE and they agreed to let me take a vehicle from the SUV section.
If you're staying in Denver you will be fine with a FWD car, but if you're heading up into the mountains I'd book the class of car you need and not bother with the aisle. Alternatively, you can make 2 reservations and cancel one if you see something that will work for you in the Executive aisle.
