I agree with ninjalad and unless there is some sort of general exception introduced then you'll lose the deposit.
If / when you finally do decide to cancel I'd call the hotel and try and negotiate. You may still indeed have to pay the deposit (or it's not refunded) but they may be flexible in allowing it as a credit towards a future booking at that hotel.
First class advice from you and ninalad ... much appreciated and will do exactly as you say.
Is ironic isn't it, the second part of our stay is 19 nights at 100k per night and absolutely zero problem to cancel. But one night at discounted rate is (potentially) retained :-)
But as you say, best to discuss with the hotel in the worst case ... which I fear will be the case unless our situ here on the island improves dramatically in the next two months.
